Tips for Planning Skagway Excursions on your own
Planning is key to a successful Skagway shore excursion:
- Book in Advance: Popular tours fill up quickly, especially during peak season (mid-May to mid-September). Book early to secure your spot.
- High Ratings. Choose excursions that have high ratings and reviews among previous guests. We do not choose tours below a 4.5-star rating.
- Check Weather: Skagway’s weather can be unpredictable. Pack layers and be prepared for rain or shine. Check out our Alaska cruise packing list before your trip.
- Understand Transportation Options: Check if your ship offers shuttle services if you arrive by cruise. Otherwise, consider renting a vehicle for more flexibility, especially if you want to go out of town towards the Yukon. The Skagway downtown itself is right next to the port. It is less than a 5-minute walk, so the car is not necessary to explore Skagway.
- Local Visitor Center: Utilize the Skagway Visitor Center for maps, tips, and updated local information.
- Safety First: Always prioritize safety, especially on outdoor excursions. Stick to marked trails and follow local guidelines.
By planning ahead, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable Skagway experience, balancing organized tours with personal exploration.

Hello,
Which train is best: the White Pass or the Bennet Scenic Journey?
Both are great, and the beginning of the route is basically the same. The classic White Pass train is usually about a 40-mile round trip from Skagway to White Pass Summit and back, covering the most dramatic scenery with waterfalls, cliffs, and bridges. The Bennett Scenic Journey continues much farther into British Columbia to Bennett Lake, so it’s longer, more immersive, and includes more wilderness and Gold Rush history. If you want the classic iconic Skagway train experience, White Pass is perfect. If you have more time, and love scenic rail journeys and don’t mind a full-day excursion, I’d choose Bennett.
