Our Experiences Taking Shore Excursions in Ketchikan

Chris and I have explored Ketchikan on several Alaska cruises, combining guided excursions with time exploring on foot. Flying over Misty Fjords, walking through the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary, and watching black bears have been highlights.

Our Misty Fjords floatplane trip remains one of our favorite Alaska cruise experiences. From the air, we photographed granite cliffs, waterfalls, alpine lakes, and forests stretching far beyond town. Rainforest walks offered a closer look at the moss-covered trees, salmon streams, and wildlife habitats.

We most often book excursions independently through Viator and compare prices with the cruise line’s options. On our Misty Fjords flight, another couple from our ship shared the same plane and experience. They booked through the cruise line and paid $150 more per person than we did.

We also know how quickly a port stop passes. When planning one day in Ketchikan, choosing your main excursion first helps you leave realistic time for downtown.

Our recommendations below combine those firsthand experiences with selected tours for different interests, budgets, and group sizes. We explain each tour’s main highlights so you can choose the experience that fits your visit.

Alaskan Bear Encounter by Land & Sea

Visit Neets Bay Bear Observatory on a dedicated black-bear excursion combining coastal cruising and guided forest walking. This seasonal outing suits travelers who want to prioritize bears without taking a small-aircraft flight.

Travel by road to the boat departure point, then cruise through forest-lined waterways toward Neets Bay. After arriving, follow a forest trail to the viewing area. Returning salmon attract wild black bears, creating opportunities to observe their feeding behavior.

Chris and I have visited Neets Bay and appreciate the chance to explore beyond Ketchikan’s roadside wildlife stops. For comparisons with other locations, see our bear watching in Ketchikan guide.

Allow approximately four hours and 45 minutes for the excursion. Our recommended listing offers departures from July 20 through September 30. Wild sightings are never guaranteed.

How to Choose the Right Ketchikan Shore Excursion

Choose an experience you’ll enjoy without rushing your day in port. These practical details can help you narrow the options:

  • Your available time: Include check-in, transportation, and a comfortable return buffer. A five-hour tour needs more than a five-hour port call.
  • Your docking location: Direct Ward Cove pickup saves a separate shuttle trip. Downtown arrivals can walk to many meeting points.
  • Your group size: Private tours can offer good value for families and friends. Compare the total price for everyone traveling together.
  • Your preferred activity level: Consider time spent walking, standing, or boarding boats. A seated show offers a different experience from a rainforest walk.
  • Your other cruise excursions: Add variety across ports. Ketchikan’s cultural sites, rainforest, and flightseeing can complement whale watching or glacier outings elsewhere.

Compare inclusions alongside the price. Transportation, admission fees, fishing licenses, and optional extras can affect the total cost. Choose the tour whose overall experience best matches your priorities.ive culture.

Booking Ketchikan Shore Excursions From Your Cruise Ship

You can book these Ketchikan tours independently, without purchasing through your cruise line or travel agent. The main logistical detail is where your ship docks: downtown or at Ward Cove.

Downtown Cruise Berths and Tour Meeting Points

Ketchikan’s Berths 1–4 line the downtown waterfront, putting many excursion meeting points within walking distance of your ship.

Several tours above meet near “The Rock” statue and the Visitors Bureau at Berth 2. The Crab Fisherman’s Tour and fishing combo meet at Berth 3. Follow the location and arrival time on your booking confirmation.

Your exact berth affects the walk. The Ketchikan cruise port guide explains the docking areas, waterfront layout, and transportation options.

Taking a Tour From Ward Cove

Ward Cove is outside downtown, so direct tour pickup can simplify your day. Among our recommendations, these tours offer Ward Cove pickup:

  • Full Day Tour for Ward Cove Customers
  • Off the Beaten Path Ketchikan Photo Safari
  • Private Fishing Charter in Ketchikan

Other excursions require transportation downtown. The complimentary shuttle ride takes approximately 20 minutes each way, plus waiting and walking time. Allow additional time when several ships are in port.

The Crab Fisherman’s Tour specifies at least 45 minutes for the shuttle and walk, before its advance check-in deadline. The Duck Tour has separate paid transportation arrangements for Ward Cove passengers.

Booking Independently Through Viator

We most often use Viator for convenience and to compare tours, prices, and booking terms. Independently booked excursions can cost substantially less than the cruise line’s version of the same experience.

Compare what each option includes, especially transportation, admission fees, and cancellation terms. These details vary between tours.

For a fuller comparison, booking Alaska shore excursions on your own vs. through the cruise line explains the practical differences and shares our experiences.

What to Wear and Bring on Your Ketchikan Excursion

Dress in layers and bring a waterproof jacket, even if the morning starts clear. Boat rides can feel cool, while rainforest paths may stay damp after the rain stops.

Adjust your clothing and day bag to your excursion:

  • Rainforest walks: Wear comfortable shoes with good traction. Closed-toe footwear helps on damp paths.
  • Boat tours and fishing charters: Add a warm layer and a hat that stays secure in the wind.
  • Floatplane flights: Keep your camera ready and bring a compact bag that fits comfortably in the cabin.
  • Sightseeing and photography tours: Carry a spare camera battery and a waterproof cover or dry bag for electronics.

Bring any personal medication, including your usual motion-sickness remedy if needed. Fishing guests should also have the required license.

Keep your booking confirmation and meeting instructions available offline. Before leaving the ship, note its all-aboard time and carry the identification required for reboarding.

  1. I have to start by saying that I’ve never associated rain forests with Alaska! I thought they only existed in the tropics. I guess not! As for which tour I would prefer, it would definitely be the Misty Fjords Floatplane Tour. I love the sound of flying above granite cliffs, narrow fjords, waterfalls, and alpine lakes – especially with a guaranteed window seat! I Flew in a small in the Philippines once, and I loved flying at a low altitude. The views were amazing! O course, I was viewing islands scattered in the sea rather than a snowy terrain. Am I correct in assuming that a floatplane is like a seaplane? Because I’ve always wanted to experience a plane taking off and landing on the water.
