Alaska Cruise in June: Our Experiences

For Chris and me, June is one of our favorite months to cruise Alaska, along with May cruises and early September cruises. As wildlife lovers, we’ve had the chance to spot baby seagulls, young sandhill cranes, moose calves, and even young bears learning to fish.

For anyone who loves birds and wildlife, June is a perfect time to experience Alaska’s natural wonders up close.

Last time, Chris and I took an unforgettable 7-night cruise in June, sailing from Seward to Vancouver aboard the Norwegian Jewel.

The cruise was the perfect ending to a 4-week road trip we had just completed on our own, exploring Alaska’s landscapes and hidden gems. The combination of road and sea adventures made this journey one of our most memorable yet!

• Juneau. Average temperatures range from around 48°F (9°C) in the early morning to highs around 62°F (17°C) in the afternoon. This mild weather makes outdoor excursions comfortable, especially with layered clothing.
• Ketchikan. Known for its rain, Ketchikan sees temperatures similar to Juneau, with daytime highs around 61°F (16°C). While some days are clear, light rain is frequent, so having a waterproof jacket or poncho is essential.
• Skagway. Skagway tends to be drier than other ports, with temperatures ranging from 50°F (10°C) in the morning to 66°F (19°C) in the afternoon. The drier, sunny weather is perfect for outdoor activities and scenic tours.
• Icy Strait Point (near Hoonah). Daytime highs average in the upper 50s to low 60s°F (14-16°C), with cooler mornings and evenings.
• Sitka. Temperatures typically range from lows around 48°F (9°C) to highs near 58°F (14°C).
• Whittier. Average temperatures are cooler, with highs around 50°F (10°C) and lows near 40°F (4°C).
• Seward. Experiences average daily high temperatures ranging from 56°F to 60°F (13°C to 16°C), with lows between 44°F and 49°F (7°C to 9°C).
• Haines. Sees average daily highs increasing from 62°F to 65°F (17°C to 18°C) and lows from 47°F to 52°F (8°C to 11°C) during the same month.
