Denali is the most popular and most visited national park in Alaska thanks to its easy access, stunning vistas, wildlife viewing opportunities, and activities ranging from family-friendly walks to true adventures—so booking your stay early matters if you want the best locations at reasonable prices.

During our visits to Denali National Park, Chris and I stayed in several types of accommodations. We camped inside the park and also spent a few nights in our RV at campgrounds near Denali, especially around Talkeetna and Healy.

We’ve also enjoyed comfortable stays in lodges close to the park entrance, in the area known as McKinley Park (often called Denali Village).

What to Know Before Booking Your Stay in Denali

Before booking your Denali stay, there are a few important things to know.

First, Denali is massive, and distances are long. The park has restrictions on private vehicles, so where you stay can make a big difference in how easily you can explore. Second, although Denali is technically open year-round, most of the park is only accessible from late May to mid-September. That’s when the Denali Park Road is open and park buses operate. Third, nearly all hotels, lodges, restaurants, and attractions around Denali are open only between May and mid-September. This short season means high demand and rising prices, so book your lodging well in advance.

Finally, Denali is truly off the beaten path. Prices for food and supplies can be much higher than in Anchorage or Fairbanks. If you’re driving, shop before you arrive. Even if you’re not camping, it’s smart to pack snacks for Denali hikes or long days in the park.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Denali National Park?

From our experience — and after visiting Denali several times — we recommend spending at least three full days in the park. That means booking two or three nights near the park entrance. Check out our detailed Denali 3-Day Itinerary for a sample schedule and travel tips.

If hiking isn’t part of your plan, one or two nights may be enough to see Denali’s highlights. Decide how active you want your trip to be before you book accommodation.

Different Areas to Stay in Denali National Park

When planning your Denali adventure, one of the first decisions is where to stay — near the park entrance or deep inside the wilderness. The choice depends on how you want to experience Denali.

Inside the park, you’ll be surrounded by true Alaskan wilderness, home to grizzly bears, wolves, moose, and caribou. If you stay in one of the lodges or designated areas within the park, be prepared for possible wildlife encounters and limited access to amenities.

A few exclusive lodges are located in the remote Kantishna area, at the very end of Denali Park Road. These are fly-in lodges, reachable only by bush plane or helicopter. Prices start around $1,500 per night, but the experience — complete solitude and incredible scenery — is unforgettable.

For most travelers, though, the best option is to stay near the park entrance. Over 90% of visitors choose this area because it offers the most convenience, comfort, and easy access to Denali’s tours and activities. In our opinion, McKinley Park — also known as Denali Village — is the top place to stay. It’s the closest community to the entrance and offers a wide range of hotels, lodges, and cabins for every budget.

McKinley Park, also known as Denali Park or Denali Village, is the closest community to Denali National Park’s entrance — only about 7 miles south of the gate.

It’s the main hub for visitors exploring Denali’s breathtaking landscapes. From most hotels in McKinley Park, you can easily get to the park entrance, Savage River area, or to the visitor center on free shuttle buses.

If you’re arriving by the Alaska Railroad, getting to the park is easy — most hotels in McKinley Park offer free shuttle buses to the park entrance and train depot.

Many hotels in McKinley Park offer a free shuttle to the park entrance and and the Alaska Railroad depot, making it one of the most convenient places to stay if you’re arriving by train.

Staying in McKinley Park means being surrounded by Alaska’s wild beauty. Picture mountain views, dense forests, and the chance to spot moose wandering nearby. Here you’ll find cozy lodges, local restaurants, and beautiful mountain views. Healy is also home to the Usibelli Coal Mine, Alaska’s only active coal mine, and the Black Diamond Golf Course, where you can play a round surrounded by wilderness.

One of our favorite places in Healy is the 49th State Brewing Company. It’s more than a brewery — it’s a local landmark and gathering spot. Visitors can enjoy craft beers, hearty Alaskan dishes, and outdoor seating with a view.

This is also where you’ll find the replica of the Magic Bus 142, made famous by the story of Christopher McCandless from Into the Wild. You can explore the bus, take photos, and learn more about this remarkable story.

Cantwell is a small, unincorporated community about 27 miles south of Denali’s entrance. The drive takes roughly 30–40 minutes, making it a practical base for exploring both Denali National Park and Denali State Park.

The town sits at the junction of the Parks Highway and Denali Highway, one of Alaska’s most scenic routes. Nearby, you can see the quirky and long-abandoned Igloo Hotel, a popular roadside photo stop.

Cantwell is surrounded by breathtaking wilderness and offers a quieter, more remote stay than McKinley Park or Healy. It’s a great place for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. In winter, the area transforms into a hub for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Though it’s a bit farther from the park, Talkeetna is absolutely worth a stop. Chris and I love this town. We once took a glacier landing flight over Denali from Talkeetna, and it remains one of our most unforgettable adventures in Alaska.

Many of these properties provide free shuttle service to and from the depot, making it easy to reach your hotel and explore the park without a car.

Because this area is in high demand, it’s best to book your stay well in advance, especially during the summer season.

Our Tip: Not all hotels in the Denali area offer a shuttle service. We recommend booking well in advance if you require this service, especially if you plan a trip during the high season between May 20th and mid-September. Also, check directly in the hotel if the shuttle service is available.

Where to Stay Inside Denali National Park?

NPS Campgrounds

Inside the park, along Denali Park Road, you have six campgrounds managed by NPS. We prepared a detailed guide about NPS campgrounds in Denali because we spent several nights enjoying camping inside the park.

Our tip: book the campsite in advance as it is trendy and places are limited. Denali has special free Camper Buses to take you to the selected campsite with your luggage. You can book it once you have booked a campsite.

Backpacking in Denali

You can also backpack through the wilderness in Denali and sleep in a tent outside the NPS campgrounds. But you must be experienced, self-sufficient, and prepared to encounter wild animals (grizzly bears and wolves).

Most of all, you must obtain a free backcountry permit and attend a backcountry orientation in the Denali Backcountry Information Center before the permit is issued.

Denali Wilderness Lodges

Several historic lodges in Denali National Park are deep amidst the silence and pure wilderness. Staying in them is contact with nature and the majesty of Denali. Due to the prices, we haven’t managed to spend a night there yet, but it’s on our wish list.

Denali Backcountry Lodge

• Location: Denali Backcountry Lodge is deep in the heart of the park at the end of Denali Park Road.

Where to Stay in Denali in Winter?

Winter in Denali National Park presents a serene and magical landscape, but it also means that many facilities and accommodations close for the season. When traveling during winter, having a reliable vehicle is important since no buses or shuttles are available. Ensure your vehicle has a 4-wheel drive; don’t forget to bring chains for the wheels.

Winter weather in Denali can be unpredictable. Ensure you have proper clothing, equipment, and awareness of weather conditions.

During the winter, hotels, and lodges in McKinley Park are closed. To find accommodation, you must search nearby towns such as Healy, Cantwell, Fairbanks, and Talkeetna.

Most shops and restaurants in the area are closed or have limited hours during winter. So, stock up on food, snacks, and beverages in Fairbanks or Anchorage before embarking on your Denali winter trip.
