Exploring Hope: Our Experiences
On our first RV journey through Alaska, a curious name caught my eye on the map: Hope. “What’s Hope?” I inquired, turning to Chris. “I had no idea. It seemed like a dot on the map”. Given our freedom with the camper truck and no strict schedule—we were on a year-long road trip adventure, after all—I suggested a detour.
“Let’s give it a shot; let’s give hope for Hope and check what it offers,” I said. It’s just a 30-minute detour off the Seward Highway. Intrigued, we steered our course toward this unknown gem.
We arrived in Hope after about 17 miles of driving along a stunningly scenic route in early September. We parked our camper and walked towards a café, only to find it shut.

The silence was so profound that we wondered if we’d stumbled upon a deserted ghost town. No one was around, and the streets were bare.
Chris suggested, “Looks like there’s nothing here for us; maybe we should head back to Seward.” But I felt a nudge of curiosity.” We’ve got time,” I countered. Let’s wander around and see the buildings; maybe we’ll bump into someone.”
Sure enough, within just half a minute, our assumptions were proven wrong. Hope was not an abandoned town at all. Two locals were leisurely enjoying their afternoon beer on the porch at the neighboring house. They greeted us with the warmth of old friends, explaining, “You’ve arrived at season’s end, so it’s pretty quiet now. But you’re welcome here! Let us show you around and share some tips on enjoying a day in Hope.”
We had a great time, and now we tell you what exciting things to see and do in Hope and how to get there.

Echoes of the Gold Rush
Hope doesn’t have the typical mining artifacts or buildings you’d find at places like Independence Mine at Hatcher Pass or in Skagway’s historic district. There’s not much left regarding physical structures or relics from the gold rush days. But what Hope lacks in tangible artifacts, it makes up for with its spirit and atmosphere.
The town’s gold rush history is subtly woven into the fabric of its present. Back in the 1890s, gold seekers flooded into this area, sparking a rush that shaped the town.
Strolling through Hope, you’ll encounter a few old buildings and remnants that hint at its bustling past. These modest landmarks, like the preserved log cabins and the historical Hope Social Hall, offer a glimpse into the life of a bygone era.
