Norwegian Sun Review: Our Cabin, Food, Ship Photos, and Alaska Experience

Norwegian Sun suited us well for a ten-night Alaska cruise, with a manageable layout, comfortable viewing spaces, and good value. We chose an inside cabin and spent more of our budget exploring ashore. Onboard, we enjoyed the food, helpful service, and places to relax between port visits. However, this older ship has fewer attractions than Norwegian’s larger vessels. Our Wi-Fi experience also fell short. Your priorities will influence how much those trade-offs matter. In this Norwegian Sun review, we share our cabin experience, dining impressions, favorite viewing areas, and original ship photos. We explain what we enjoyed, what could improve, and who might appreciate this style of cruising. If you prefer a smaller ship and care more about the destinations than onboard attractions, Norwegian Sun is worth considering. Here’s how the experience worked for us.

Our Experience Cruising on Norwegian Sun

Chris and I spent ten nights aboard Norwegian Sun on a round-trip Alaska cruise from Seattle cruise port. We paid for the cruise, onboard extras, and shore excursions ourselves.

After years of exploring Alaska by road and sea, we chose this sailing for its itinerary, price, and smaller ship size. We wanted time in the ports, good places to watch the scenery, and comfortable spaces to relax between outings.

Booking an inside cabin helped us reserve more of our budget for shore excursions. We spent much of our time outside the room, enjoying the decks, lounges, restaurants, and evening entertainment.

The ship’s layout worked well for us. We could find quiet places to read or watch the coastline without needing constant activities. We particularly enjoyed the Observation Lounge and Sports Bar for their views.

Our experience also included drawbacks, especially slow and unreliable Wi-Fi. Throughout this review, we explain those trade-offs alongside what we enjoyed.

This article focuses on life aboard the ship. Our ten-day Alaska cruise review covers the ports, daily itinerary, and excursions from the same sailing.

Norwegian Sun Review at a Glance

Norwegian Sun worked well for our priorities: exploring Alaska, watching the scenery, and enjoying a comfortable cruise at a reasonable price. Here’s how we felt about the main parts of our ten-night sailing.

What we liked most: The manageable layout, scenery viewing, dining flexibility, and helpful crew.

What could have been better: Wi-Fi reliability. The smaller selection of onboard attractions may also matter more to other travelers than it did to us.

Norwegian Sun Size, Age, and Refurbishment

Norwegian Sun measures 848 feet long and carries 1,878 guests at double occupancy. That passenger figure assumes two guests per cabin; additional occupants can increase the total.

Built in 2001, the NCL ship’s latest listed refurbishment was in 2024. Its traditional layout and smaller selection of attractions differ from Norwegian’s newer mega-ships.

For us, the size was an advantage. We found it easy to move between our cabin, restaurants, lounges, and outdoor viewing areas. We also found quiet places to read or enjoy the scenery.

An older ship can still offer a comfortable cruise. During our sailing, we appreciated the cleanliness and upkeep. However, our observations describe the ship during our visit, rather than its condition on every departure.

When comparing ships, consider how you want to spend your days. Norwegian Sun suited our preference for exploring ports, watching Alaska’s coastline, and enjoying relaxed evenings aboard.

Our Norwegian Sun Inside Cabin Review

An inside cabin suited our Alaska cruise because we prioritized excursions and time enjoying the ship’s public spaces. We mainly used the room to sleep, shower, and prepare for the next day.

Why We Chose an Inside Cabin

The price helped us decide. We know how quickly Alaska cruise expenses add up, so we chose a more affordable cabin. We preferred to spend more of our budget on experiences ashore than on a private balcony.

That choice matched our travel style. We enjoy photographing scenery from different viewpoints and exploring ports during the day. We were comfortable leaving the cabin whenever we wanted to see outside.

Cabin Comfort and Bathroom

Our inside cabin gave us a private place to return after excursions and evening activities. The room and bathroom met our needs during the ten-night sailing.

The main compromise was the lack of natural light. We needed to head to a public lounge or outdoor deck to check the weather and watch the coastline.

Our cabin and bathroom photographs show the space we used. Layouts and furnishings can differ between cabin categories, so compare your selected stateroom with the ship’s deck plans.

Would We Choose an Inside Cabin Again?

Yes. As budget-conscious travelers, we preferred to spend the savings on Alaska cruise excursions. We spent little time in the room and enjoyed the ship’s public viewing spaces.

However, our standard inside cabin would not be our choice for someone needing more space or easier movement around the room. Travelers with mobility limitations should consider a cabin layout that meets their needs. Wheelchair users may need a specifically designated accessible stateroom.

A balcony provides private outdoor space and scenery without leaving your room. An oceanview cabin adds natural light. For us, the standard inside cabin offered the value we wanted.

Norwegian Sun Food: What We Ate and Enjoyed

We enjoyed the food on Norwegian Sun, with enough variety to keep meals interesting throughout our ten-night cruise. Flexible dining also worked well around our shore excursions.

Included Dining

The ship’s two main dining rooms, Seven Seas and Four Seasons, offered sit-down meals included in our fare. We appreciated having this option when we wanted a relaxed dinner after exploring ashore.

For more casual meals, we used the Garden Café buffet. The selection gave us flexibility at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We found the food fresh and enjoyed trying different dishes throughout the sailing.

The Sports Bar was another favorite place to spend time, particularly because we could enjoy the views alongside a casual meal.

Specialty Dining

Specialty restaurants provided an alternative when we wanted a different dining experience. Our booking included one specialty dinner, giving us a chance to enjoy a meal beyond the included venues.

Options aboard Norwegian Sun include Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro, La Cucina, and Teppanyaki. These restaurants have additional charges unless your booking includes a suitable dining benefit.

When comparing fares, check the actual dining allowance and any associated charges. Our offer reflected our booking and should not be treated as a standard inclusion.

Gluten-Free and Lactose-Free Dining

I follow a gluten-free and lactose-free diet, and I found plenty of suitable choices during our cruise. This mattered throughout the sailing, rather than only during specialty meals.

We appreciated the staff’s help with dietary questions. Having several dining venues also gave us flexibility when choosing where to eat.

Explain your dietary requirements to the dining team early. If you have an allergy or need strict cross-contact precautions, discuss those requirements specifically.

Flexible Dining and Dress Code

Flexible dining suited our Alaska itinerary. We could plan dinner around excursions and evening activities rather than return for a fixed seating time.

We wore comfortable clothes during the day and changed when we wanted a more dressed-up evening. Dining rules vary by restaurant, so check the requirements for your chosen venue.

For us, the combination of included meals, dining flexibility, and dietary accommodation contributed to the ship’s value.

Our Favorite Places to Enjoy the Views

Norwegian Sun’s public viewing spaces helped make our inside cabin a practical choice. We could enjoy Alaska’s coastline from indoor seating or head outside with our cameras.

Indoor Viewing Spaces

The Observation Lounge was one of our favorite places to watch the scenery. Its large windows let us enjoy the coastline while staying sheltered from wind and rain.

We also spent time in the Sports Bar, where we enjoyed the views alongside casual meals and drinks. These spaces gave us reasons to leave the cabin and enjoy the journey between ports.

Indoor viewing mattered during our Alaska sailing. We could warm up, sit down, and continue watching for mountains, waterfalls, and wildlife.

Outdoor Decks and Photography

We preferred the outdoor decks for photography because we could avoid reflections from windows. Moving between viewpoints also helped us photograph different parts of the coastline.

Rather than stay in one place, we changed positions as the scenery unfolded. That flexibility suited us better than watching everything from one side of a private balcony.

Keep your camera ready and wear warm layers. Wind can make an outdoor viewing session feel cold, even when you were comfortable inside.

Was a Balcony Necessary for Our Alaska Cruise?

For us, no. We enjoyed the scenery without paying for a balcony cabin. The combination of indoor lounges and outdoor decks worked well for our budget and photography interests.

A balcony offers private viewing and outdoor space directly beside your room. That convenience may matter if reaching public decks frequently would be tiring.

We were happy to use the shared spaces and put the cabin savings toward experiences ashore.

Entertainment and Things to Do on Norwegian Sun

Norwegian Sun offered enough entertainment for our evenings without making the ship the focus of our trip. After exploring Alaska’s ports, we enjoyed a show, live music, or a quiet place to unwind.

Shows and Live Music

We attended comedy and live music performances during our sailing. These gave us options after dinner without needing to plan every evening in advance.

The Stardust Theater hosts the ship’s main stage entertainment. Performances vary by sailing, so use the daily schedule to see what’s available during your cruise.

We also enjoyed spending time in the lounges. Some evenings, listening to music with a drink suited us better than attending a larger show.

Pools, Hot Tubs, and Fitness Facilities

The pool deck gave us another place to relax between port visits. During our sailing, we enjoyed the pool and spa alongside the ship’s other amenities.

Norwegian Sun also has hot tubs and a fitness center. These provide options for passengers who want exercise or relaxation on sea days.

However, Alaska’s weather affects how appealing outdoor facilities feel. We appreciated having indoor spaces available when we wanted warmth and shelter.

Quiet Places to Relax

Finding a quiet corner mattered more to us than having constant organized activities. We found places to read, watch the water, and take a break from the busier areas.

The library and quieter deck spaces suited this slower pace. Our days already included excursions and photography, so we didn’t need a packed onboard schedule.

The ship also offers a casino, shops, and other scheduled activities. These were secondary to our priorities, but they add options for time aboard.

Check the Freestyle Daily each evening. We found the schedule useful for choosing performances and activities around our plans for the following day.

Service, Cleanliness, and Ship Condition

The helpful crew and cleanliness were among Norwegian Sun’s strengths during our ten-night sailing. We felt comfortable in our cabin and the public areas we used.

Cabin and Public-Area Cleanliness

Our cabin and bathroom were clean, and we regularly noticed staff maintaining shared spaces. Restaurants, lounges, and the pool area also appeared well cared for during our visit.

The ship’s older design did not prevent us from enjoying these spaces. We cared more about cleanliness, comfort, and working facilities than having the newest décor.

Helpful Dining and Guest Services Staff

We particularly appreciated the dining staff’s help with my gluten-free and lactose-free requirements. Their assistance made choosing suitable meals easier throughout the cruise.

Staff also helped with restaurant reservations and questions about onboard activities. We used these services when we needed guidance, then planned the rest of our time ourselves.

The Freestyle Daily helped us keep track of the schedule. Together, clear activity information and approachable staff made daily planning straightforward.

Our Impression of the Ship’s Condition

Norwegian Sun felt comfortable and well maintained during our sailing. That is our assessment of the areas we used, rather than a technical inspection.

An older ship deserves realistic expectations about design and amenities. For us, its condition supported the kind of cruise we wanted: active days ashore and relaxed time aboard.

Wi-Fi and Staying Connected

Wi-Fi was one of the weaker parts of our Norwegian Sun experience. Our booking included 150 minutes of internet access, but the connection was slow and unreliable.

How the Connection Worked for Us

We encountered interruptions that made online tasks frustrating. The included minutes were useful to have, but they did not provide the dependable connection we wanted.

Based on that experience, we would avoid relying on onboard Wi-Fi for time-sensitive work or video calls. We would download essential documents before boarding and keep important booking details available offline.

Check Your Booking’s Internet Allowance

Our internet allowance reflected the package we booked. Current packages, equipment, and performance may differ from our sailing.

Check how much access your fare includes, which devices it covers, and what an upgrade costs. Internet access should be part of your total cruise budget if staying connected matters to you.

Using Mobile Data in Port

We also used mobile data when service was available ashore. Check your carrier’s Alaska and Canada coverage before sailing.

Keep your phone in airplane mode at sea, then enable Wi-Fi separately if needed. Review your carrier’s maritime roaming terms before allowing a connection through the ship’s cellular network.

For us, Norwegian Sun worked better as a place to enjoy Alaska than as a dependable workspace.

What Worked Well on Norwegian Sun in Alaska

Norwegian Sun suited the way we wanted to explore Alaska: active days ashore followed by relaxed evenings aboard. The itinerary and overall value mattered more to us than having the newest ship.

A Comfortable Base Between Port Visits

After excursions, we appreciated returning for a meal, a shower, and somewhere comfortable to sit. Flexible dining helped us fit dinner around our plans.

The manageable layout also made moving between restaurants, lounges, and outdoor decks straightforward. We could enjoy an evening performance or find a quiet place to read.

Public Spaces for Watching Alaska

We saw whales, waterfalls, and glaciers from the ship during our sailing. Having indoor and outdoor viewing options helped us enjoy those moments without a balcony cabin.

For photography, we liked moving around rather than staying at one viewpoint. When we wanted shelter, we could continue watching the coastline from inside.

More of Our Budget for Experiences Ashore

Choosing an inside cabin left more money for excursions. That trade-off worked because our main goal was exploring Alaska’s ports and surrounding landscapes.

Compare the itinerary as carefully as the ship. Port hours, docking locations, and scenic cruising days shape what you can experience. A ship you enjoy cannot compensate for an itinerary that misses your priorities.

Our Alaska Cruise Planner helps you compare routes, timing, budgets, and port activities when planning your own sailing.

Who Would Enjoy Norwegian Sun?

Norwegian Sun is a good fit for travelers who value a manageable ship, relaxed evenings, and time exploring destinations. It suited our budget-conscious approach to Alaska cruising.

Travelers Who May Appreciate It

Consider Norwegian Sun if you enjoy traditional cruise activities: dining, live music, theater performances, and watching the scenery.

We appreciated finding quiet places to read and relax. We also felt comfortable choosing an inside cabin because we enjoyed spending time elsewhere aboard.

Value matters, too. Compare the total fare with the itinerary and cabin category. A lower price can leave more money for excursions.

Travelers Who May Prefer a Larger Ship

If onboard attractions are central to your vacation, compare Norwegian Sun with larger ships offering more facilities.

Families should consider their children’s interests rather than choose by ship size alone. Some enjoy pools and scheduled activities. Others want a wider selection of attractions and entertainment.

Our experience reflects traveling as a couple. We did not test the children’s programs ourselves.

Travelers With Mobility Needs

Norwegian Sun’s smaller size can make daily movement easier for older travelers and people with limited mobility. Compared with larger mega-ships, there is less ground to cover between cabins, restaurants, lounges, and outdoor decks.

We appreciated the straightforward layout during our sailing. Reaching different areas felt manageable, and returning to our cabin did not require a long journey across the ship.

Shorter onboard distances can also help when heading ashore, especially if your cabin is near the designated exit. However, the gangway location and distance through the port vary by arrival.

Cabin choice still matters. Our standard inside cabin suited our budget, but travelers needing more maneuvering space should consider a suitable layout. Wheelchair users should check designated accessible staterooms.

Our Alaska ports accessibility guide explains what to expect beyond the gangway, including shuttles, surfaces, and independent activities.
