In this article, we’ll share our camping experiences in Whittier and provide a comprehensive list of all the hotels in the area. We’ll also offer tips on lodging options outside Whittier, including nearby hotels and campgrounds. If you plan to stay in a hotel, it’s essential to book in advance. However much better option is to stay in Anchorage.
This is especially important if you plan an Alaska cruise departing from Whittier. If you want to stay in a hotel in Whittier the night before sailing, book a room several months in advance.

Camping in Whittier: Our Experiences
We have extensive experience camping in Alaska, having stayed at over 100 campgrounds throughout the state, including camping in Denali or camping on Dalton Highway.

This time, we rented a Jeep Wrangler with a rooftop tent from Alaska Adventure Rental for 4 weeks. During this trip, we spent a few nights at Whittier Bay Campground. Camping is one of Whittier’s best things to do, as the scenery is stunning.
Whittier Bay Campground isn’t the most comfortable or picturesque campground in Alaska, but it’s one of the few options available in Whittier. The campground is a large gravel lot by the bay, offering stunning views of the water and mountains. Some sites provide direct views of the bay, while others have mountain vistas.
The sites are close to each other, with no trees for privacy. While not all sites have amenities, some do feature bonfire rings and picnic tables. The campground has a bear-proof garbage container and two simple outhouses.
What Whittier Bay Campground lacks in amenities, it makes up for in natural beauty. The serene views of the bay and mountains and the peaceful atmosphere make it a place we’d love to return to.

Camping in Whittier, Alaska, is limited, and Whittier Bay Campground stands out as the best option available. It’s also close to the Portage Pass trailhead so you can hit the trail from the camping.
- Beautiful Views: Positioned at the “Head of the Bay,” the campground offers stunning views of Prince William Sound, the Chugach Mountains, and the Whittier cruise port. This location provides a picturesque backdrop for your camping experience.
- Affordable Rates: Whittier Bay Campground offers budget-friendly rates, making it accessible for all types of campers. Check out the official website for current prices. The rates are as follows: Tent Site + Vehicle: $11 per night; RV Site (no hookups): $20 per night.
- No reservation: Camping in Whittier operates on a “first come, first served” basis, and stays are limited to a maximum of 7 days. You can pay on-site where the host is located, online using the app, or at the Harbor Office in the center of Whittier.
- Seasonality: This campground is open only in the summer months, usually from mid-May. The best way to check if it is open is to follow the city of Whittier’s Facebook profile.

Staying in Anchorage
If you don’t mind a bit of a drive, Anchorage is just 60 miles from Whittier and offers various lodging options.
