Our Experience on the Knik Glacier Helicopter Tour

Taking a helicopter tour to Knik Glacier was one of the most unforgettable experiences we’ve had in Alaska. Chris and I have explored many parts of the state, including several flightseeing tours, but this one felt completely different from the start.

But I had seen photos of Knik Glacier and knew I wanted to experience it. I decided to book this 90 minutes glacier helicopter tour anyway. A few days later, Chris changed his mind and joined me—and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of our trip.

We flew out from near Palmer, just outside Anchorage, with a tour operated by Outbound Heli Adventures. The moment the helicopter lifted off, the landscape quickly opened up. Braided rivers, rugged terrain, and glacier-fed valleys stretched below us as we headed toward the ice.

Then we saw Knik Glacier. The scale is hard to describe. Massive ice fields, deep blue crevasses, and long ridges extended for miles in every direction. Even after seeing other glaciers in Alaska, this view felt unique because of how vast and wild the area is.

Landing on the glacier was the highlight. Stepping out onto the ice felt surreal. Everything was quiet, remote, and untouched. We had time to walk around, take photos, and truly take in the surroundings.

For us, this was not just another tour. It was easily one of the best things to do in Alaska, especially if you want a unique glacier experience that goes far beyond what you can see from the road.

We booked this 90-minute helicopter tour with one glacier landing, which included about 40 minutes of flight time round-trip and around 45 minutes on the glacier to explore and take photos. There is also a Grand Helicopter Tour available, with a 2-hour flight and three glacier landings—definitely on our bucket list, though a bit pricey for us.

Most helicopter tours depart from the Knik River area near Palmer. From there, it takes only a few minutes by air to reach the glacier, which is why this tour is one of the easiest ways to experience a remote Alaska glacier without a long journey.

While it is technically possible to reach areas near Knik Glacier by ATV or off-road tours, the best views—and the only way to land directly on the glacier—are by helicopter.

Most tours typically cost between $520 and $780 per person, depending on the length of the flight and the number of glacier landings included. Shorter flights with one landing are usually on the lower end, while longer tours with multiple landings or extended time on the glacier can cost more.

Prices may also vary based on the operator, group size, and time of year. Peak summer months often have higher demand, so booking in advance is recommended.

While the price is not low, this experience offers something you cannot easily do on your own. Flying over vast ice fields and landing directly on a glacier makes it very different from other Alaska tours. For many travelers, it becomes one of the highlights of their trip.

How to Prepare for a Knik Glacier Helicopter Tour

• Dress in layers. Temperatures on the glacier can be colder and windier than in town. Wearing layers allows you to adjust during the flight and while standing on the ice.
• Wear sturdy shoes. You will be walking on uneven, sometimes slippery ice. Good traction is important. Most operators provide overboots or ice cleats (protective covers worn over your shoes) to help you walk safely on the glacier.
• Bring a camera or phone. This is one of the most photogenic experiences in Alaska. Make sure your devices are fully charged before the flight.
• Avoid large bags or backpacks. Space inside the helicopter is limited, so it’s best to bring only essentials.
• Wear sunglasses. The sunlight reflecting off the ice can be very bright, especially on clear days.
