Scenic Flights in Denali: Our Experiences
If you’re looking for Alaska’s must-do experiences, flightseeing should be high on your list—the views are breathtaking and stay with you long after the flight ends.
Chris and I absolutely love Denali National Park. We’ve visited multiple times, hiking, camping, and enjoying all the incredible activities this stunning park offers.
One of the most unforgettable experiences is flightseeing in Denali. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
While exploring Talkeetna, we took a scenic flight tour by plane operated by K2 with a glacier landing. It was incredible. We’ve also experienced other scenic flights in Alaska, like flying over the Brooks Range with Coyote Air and over Katmai National Park. Each flight is an amazing experience, and we can’t get enough.
During our recent six-week Alaska road trip, I decided to book this helicopter flight with a glacier landing from Denali Village, right next to the entrance of Denali National Park. After analyzing reviews, offers, and prices I chose TEMSCO Helicopters Inc. for this adventure.
I want to emphasize that this is not a sponsored post. I paid for the tour myself and am sharing my honest opinion and photos from the experience. My goal is to help you decide if this trip is right for you.

Why a Denali Helicopter Tour is A Must-Do Experience?
A Denali helicopter tour is not just a flight; it’s an adventure that offers a unique perspective of one of the most stunning landscapes in the world. Here are a few reasons why this experience should be on your Alaska bucket list:
Unmatched Aerial Views
From the moment you lift off, you’ll be treated to breathtaking aerial views that are simply not possible from the ground. Soaring above the snow-capped peaks, vast tundras, and massive glaciers of Denali National Park gives you a true sense of the park’s immense scale and beauty.
During my helicopter flight, I was fortunate to have wonderfully sunny weather. The clear skies allowed the snow on the glacier to sparkle brilliantly in the sunlight, creating a breathtaking scene.
The helicopters, painted in vibrant red, stood out strikingly against the pristine white landscape. This contrast made for some stunning photographs.
The bright red of the helicopter against the vast expanse of glittering snow provided a perfect backdrop, ensuring that every photo from this trip was truly spectacular. The combination of ideal weather conditions and the vivid colors of the helicopter made this experience not only memorable but also visually captivating.

Unique Glacier Landing Experience
One of the highlights of a Denali helicopter tour is the glacier landing. Stepping onto an ancient glacier is a surreal experience. The pristine ice fields and the sense of isolation and tranquility make this a moment you’ll never forget. Walking on a glacier, surrounded by the untouched beauty of nature, allows you to fully appreciate the raw power and majesty of Alaska’s wilderness.
Walking on the glacier was a short but incredibly beautiful experience, lasting around 20 minutes. There was ample time for photos, capturing the stunning landscape. We stayed close to the helicopter, following the instructions of our experienced pilot, Felix.
One of the highlights was the special anti-slip overboots provided for walking on the glacier. These ensured our safety and comfort as we explored the icy terrain.
What truly amazed me was landing near a crevice filled with vibrant blue glacier water. The color was simply breathtaking, adding an extraordinary touch to an already unforgettable adventure. This combination of natural beauty and thoughtful provisions made the glacier walk an exceptional part of the tour.

Wildlife Spotting Opportunities
A helicopter tour offers excellent opportunities for spotting wildlife. From the air, you might see caribou, moose, bears, and Dall sheep roaming the landscape below. The chance to observe these animals in their natural habitat, undisturbed by human presence, adds an extra layer of excitement to the tour.
During our return flight, our pilot, Felix, pointed out a group of Dall sheep perched on the rocky cliffs below. The sight of these agile creatures navigating the rugged terrain was truly captivating. As we continued, Felix’s keen eyes spotted a large grizzly bear roaming the landscape.
Witnessing such magnificent wildlife in Denali from the air was an unforgettable highlight, adding an extra layer of excitement to an already incredible journey.

Expert Pilots
The pilots on these tours are highly experienced and knowledgeable. They provide fascinating insights into the geology, history, and ecology of the area. Their commentary enhances the experience, helping you understand and appreciate the significance of what you’re seeing.
Our pilot, Felix, is an experienced expert with a wealth of knowledge. He enthusiastically answered all our questions about the park and the intricacies of helicopter flight.
His insights and engaging demeanor made the trip an absolute pleasure. Traveling with Felix enhanced the entire experience, as he shared fascinating details and stories, adding depth to our adventure.

Photographic Opportunities
For photographers, both amateur and professional, a Denali helicopter tour is a dream come true. The unique vantage points and stunning landscapes provide endless opportunities for capturing incredible shots. The glacier landing, in particular, offers a unique backdrop for truly memorable photos.
I captured numerous photos and shot several short videos throughout the flight.

Tips for preparing for the helicopter tour in Denali
- Helicopter tours in Denali are weather-dependent, and the organizer may cancel the tour if conditions make the flight unsafe or impossible. Based on my experience, I recommend booking your helicopter tour at the beginning of your visit to Denali and opting for morning hours. This strategy gives you the flexibility to reschedule to a later time or the next day if needed.
- If rescheduling isn’t possible within your Denali itinerary, you will receive a full refund.
- I specifically booked this trip through GetYourGuide because I’ve found their booking process to be excellent and transparent, with favorable conditions for canceling up to 24 hours before the trip.
- If you choose to book directly with TEMSCO or another organizer, carefully read the terms and conditions regarding cancellation and refunds to avoid any surprises.
- It’s important to note that you cannot bring any backpacks or handbags, even small ones, on a helicopter flight. All your belongings must be carried on you or fit in your pockets. I couldn’t even bring my camera case, although you can definitely take your camera. But don’t worry—TEMSCO headquarters in Denali provides lockers where you can securely leave your things.
- Before boarding, all passengers are weighed along with the items they wish to take on board. This ensures the weight distribution is balanced for safety. This trip is not suitable for people over 250 lbs (113 kg).
- Remember to bring sunglasses, as the snow can be blinding.
- It’s also colder and windier on the glacier, so pack a windproof jacket and a hat. For more tips, check out our detailed list of what to pack for your Alaska vacation to be prepared for any adventure.
- It’s also good to know that you don’t need hiking shoes for the glacier walk. TEMSCO provides special anti-slip glacier overboots that you can wear over your regular shoes. This ensures you have the necessary traction and safety while exploring the icy terrain.

Are There Any Disadvantages of Flying a Helicopter in Denali?
While a helicopter tour in Denali is an incredible experience, which I can higly recommended, there are a few drawbacks to consider:
Limited Time on the Glacier
I would have loved to spend more time exploring the glacier. Having previously hiked the Matanuska Glacier and Root Glacier, I know how fascinating it can be to spend extended time on these icy landscapes. The helicopter tour offers around 20 minutes on the glacier, which, while stunning, feels quite brief.
Distance from Denali’s Peak
During this helicopter flight, you won’t get up close to the peak of Denali, North America’s highest mountain. Although we caught a glimpse of the peak due to the excellent weather, it was from a distance of several dozen miles. This helicopter tour isn’t designed to approach the summit. It’s flight over Alaska Range.
If seeing Denali’s peak up close is your goal, consider a flightseeing tour by plane. Planes can fly at higher altitudes and offer a closer view of the majestic peak.
Alternative Option for Peak Viewing
For those specifically wanting to see the summit of Denali, a plane tour might be a better option. Helicopters can’t reach the same altitudes as planes, so if the peak experience is what you’re after, Denali Peak Sightseeing by plane is worth considering.
