Ketchikan is charming, compact, and full of things to do. But with multiple cruise docks, changing tour schedules, and limited time ashore, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

For Chris and me, Ketchikan is one of the best Alaska ports of call. We’ve explored it several times during our cruises. Our ships docked both in the heart of downtown and at Ward Cove. So we know exactly how to get around—no matter where you arrive.

We’ve gathered everything you need to know about the cruise port, what to expect, and how to make the most of your day.

Where Cruise Ships Dock in Ketchikan

Knowing where your ship docks is key to planning your day. Your cruise line will usually confirm the docking location before arrival. If not, you can check the Port of Ketchikan cruise ship schedule online a few days ahead.

Ketchikan has two main docking areas for cruise ships: berths in downtown and Ward Cove Dock.

Berths 1–4 in Ketchikan Downtown

The majority of ships dock right in downtown Ketchikan, at one of the four main berths along the waterfront. These are:

• Berth 1
• Berth 2
• Berth 3
• Berth 4

They are all located along Front Street and Mill Street, steps from shops, restaurants, museums, famous Creek Street, and Lumberjack Show. If your ship docks here, you’re in the perfect spot to explore on foot.

Each berth has easy, flat access to downtown. You’ll also find restrooms, tour operators, and shuttle stops nearby.

Ketchikan Cruise Port Amenities & Services

Ketchikan’s cruise port has the basic facilities you need for a smooth start to your day ashore. While it’s not a full-service terminal like in major cities, you’ll still find everything you need nearby.

The main Visitor Information Center is located near Berth 2. It’s easy to spot and a great first stop. You can pick up free maps, brochures, and ask staff for advice on what to see or how to get around. During the cruise season, smaller information booths are also open near Berth 3.

Restrooms are available near each berth. You’ll find clean public restrooms at the visitor center and in some nearby buildings along the waterfront. Berth 3 and Berth 4 also have indoor waiting areas with benches—great if you’re waiting for a tour.

There is no free public Wi-Fi at the docks, but you can often connect to Wi-Fi at the Visitor Center or inside nearby cafes and coffee shops.

Ward Cove Cruise Terminal (NCL Ships)

Some Norwegian Cruise Line ships and a few others use the Ward Cove Dock. It’s located about 7 miles (11 km) north of downtown Ketchikan.

This terminal is in a separate, private area with limited services. There’s no walking access to town—you must take transportation.

However, free shuttles run frequently between Ward Cove and downtown. The ride takes 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic and port day congestion. The drop-off point is typically near Berth 2 or 3 downtown.

You’ll also find some local tour booths and taxis available at the Ward Cove terminal. But options are more limited than downtown.

One downside of docking at Ward Cove is limited accessibility. Passengers using wheelchairs, scooters, or traveling with someone who has mobility challenges will need to board a shuttle to reach downtown. While cruise lines provide support, the extra travel time and logistics can be a barrier for some. It’s something to keep in mind when planning your port day.

Amenities & Services at Ward Cove Terminal

Ward Cove is located about 7 miles north of downtown Ketchikan. It’s a newer cruise dock, used mostly by Norwegian Cruise Line. While it feels quieter than the main downtown port, it offers several useful services to make your visit easier.

The terminal building is called The Mill—a restored pulp mill that now houses shops, a small museum space, and a café. You’ll find clean restrooms inside, a gift shop with Alaska souvenirs and local crafts, and a cozy spot to grab coffee or a snack. Free Wi-Fi is available inside the building, and seating areas make it a good place to wait for your shuttle.

A free shuttle connects Ward Cove to downtown Ketchikan. It runs regularly throughout the day. The ride takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic. Shuttles drop off at Berth 4 downtown, within walking distance of Creek Street and other attractions. Be sure to check the schedule so you don’t miss the last return to the ship.

How Far Are Ketchikan’s Main Attractions From the Port?

Ketchikan is compact, colorful, and mostly walkable—if your cruise ship docks downtown (Berths 1–4). But if you dock at Ward Cove, expect a short shuttle ride into town.

Here’s how far the most popular attractions:

If You Dock Downtown (Berths 1–4)

• Creek Street: Just a 5–10 minute walk from the dock. One of the top things to do in Ketchikan.
• The Rock Statue & Welcome to Ketchikan Sign: Right next to Berths 2 and 3. A great photo stop.
• Southeast Alaska Discovery Center: About 8 minutes on foot. Offers cultural and natural exhibits.
• Tongass Historical Museum: Only 3–5 minutes walking. A small museum with great insights into local history.
• Lumberjack Show: Located near Berth 1. You’ll reach it in less than 5 minutes on foot.
• Totem Heritage Center: About a 15–20 minute walk from the dock. Uphill, but sidewalks are wide and well-marked.

Outside of Downtown – Requires Transport

• Saxman Totem Village: 2.5 miles (4 km) from downtown. Accessible by taxi, tour, or public bus.
• Totem Bight State Historical Park: 10 miles (16 km) north of downtown. Requires a tour, taxi, or rental car.

Shore Excursions & Meeting Points

Ketchikan is one of the best ports for joining shore excursions directly from the dock. Whether you’re meeting a floatplane pilot, heading to a cultural show, or hopping on a bus to explore totem parks—it’s all well-organized and close to where you disembark.

If your cruise ship docks at Berth 1, 2, 3, or 4 in downtown Ketchikan, most tours begin right there:

• The main meeting point is near the Ketchikan Visitor Information Center, between Berths 2 and 3.
• Many local operators also gather by The Rock statue, located directly across from the Welcome to Ketchikan sign.
• Tour guides usually hold up signs with their company names or guest names and wear uniforms or badges.

If you arrive at Ward Cove:

• You’ll be bused into town (about 25 minutes).
• Shore excursions start either directly from the Ward Cove terminal or after your shuttle arrives downtown.
• If you’re meeting an independent tour, they’ll usually tell you to meet near The Rock statue or the Visitor Center.

Agnes’ Advice: Ketchikan is organized, but it gets busy when multiple ships are in port. If you’re joining an independent tour, double-check where to meet, and leave time to walk or shuttle from your dock.

Getting Around Ketchikan

Ketchikan is easy to explore from the downtown docks (Berths 1–4). Here’s how to get around:

Walkability

Downtown is compact and mostly flat. Shops, restaurants, Creek Street, and museums are within a 10-minute walk from the docks.

Public Transit in Ketchikan

Ketchikan offers regular bus service that’s ideal for reaching attractions beyond walking distance. Here’s how it works:

Free Downtown Shuttle

Runs May through September, matching Alaska cruise season. Operates daily from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with buses every 15-20 minutes. Covers major downtown docks, Visitor Center, Creek Street, and Totem Heritage Center.

Fixed-Route Buses (Green & Silver Lines)

Operate year-round; frequency and routes change seasonally. Adult fare is $2 per ride. Public buses run hourly during cruise season and cover areas like Saxman, Totem Bight State Park, and Ward Cove.

Taxis & Rideshares

Taxis run from downtown and Ward Cove. Keep in mind, during busy port days, it may be hard to find a taxi on the street—book ahead if you’re on a schedule.

Ride‑sharing is available in Ketchikan, though not as widespread as in bigger cities.

Rental Cars in Ketchikan

Renting a car can give you the flexibility to explore on your own—but it comes with a catch.

Most rental car agencies are based at Ketchikan International Airport (KTN), which is not located on the same island as the cruise docks or downtown. The airport sits on Gravina Island, just across the Tongass Narrows from the city of Ketchikan.

To reach the airport, you must take the airport ferry, which operates regularly but adds extra time and planning. The ferry departs from a small terminal near the waterfront, just south of downtown. The ride across takes about 7 minutes, but you’ll need extra time for boarding and getting to your rental car counter.

Downtown pick-up options exist. Tongass Car Rental offers free delivery and pickup at cruise ship docks (Front Street). Also Alaska Car Rental has one location close to the downtown.

Some cruise passengers use Turo (a car-sharing app) to arrange pick-up downtown, but availability is limited, and you must coordinate with the owner in advance.

Final Thoughts

Navigating the Ketchikan cruise port is easier than it may seem—especially if you know what to expect. Whether your ship docks right in the heart of downtown or arrives at Ward Cove, you’ll find clear transportation options, helpful services, and easy ways to start your day.
