Our Experience Riding the Alyeska Tramway

Chris and I had the chance to take a scenic ride on the Alyeska Tramway, and we’re excited to share our honest opinion. We’ve also experienced two other incredible tramways in Alaska—the Skyglider Gondola at Icy Strait Point, one of the best Alaska cruise port attractions, and the Goldbelt Tramway in Juneau, Alaska’s capital. So we have a solid comparison.

In short, we can tell you that Alyeska Tram is worth it—if the weather and visibility are good. The views from the top are breathtaking, but if it’s cloudy or rainy, you won’t see much, and it’s not worth the ride. The good news? You don’t need to book in advance, so you can check the forecast before deciding.

When the weather cooperates, this is one of the best things to do in Girdwood. It’s also a fantastic day trip from Anchorage in the summer, offering stunning landscapes, hiking trails, and a true taste of Alaska’s natural beauty.

If you’re planning a visit to Girdwood, this guide will help you decide whether the Alyeska Aerial Tram should be on your itinerary. Let’s dive in!

Agnes’ Advice: If you’re looking for a perfect day trip from Anchorage, consider combining Anchorage to Girdwood drive with a visit to Hope or Whittier. Thanks to Alaska’s long summer days and midnight sun, you’ll have plenty of time to explore. All three destinations are easily doable in a single day, as long as you don’t plan on long hikes. You can ride the Alyeska Tram in Girdwood, enjoy the historic charm of Hope, or take a scenic drive through the Whittier Tunnel.

Overview of the Alyeska Tramway

The Alyeska Tramway is one of Alaska’s most scenic aerial tramways, located in Girdwood, a small but stunning mountain town just 40 miles south of Anchorage. This iconic tram ride takes visitors from the base of Alyeska Resort up to Mount Alyeska’s summit. The ride is smooth and quick, covering 2,300 feet in elevation in just seven minutes.

Opened in 1993, the tram was designed to serve both skiers in winter and tourists in summer. Today, it’s a top attraction in Girdwood, drawing visitors who want to experience Alaska’s landscapes from above. On a clear day, you can see seven glaciers at once, along with lush alpine meadows, rugged peaks, and possibly even wildlife like bears or Dall sheep.

At the summit, visitors can hike, dine at a scenic restaurant, or simply take in the panoramic views. It’s a must-visit spot in Girdwood, especially for those who love mountain scenery and outdoor adventures.

Activities at the Summit

Once you reach the top of Mount Alyeska, you’ll find plenty to see and do beyond just admiring the views. Whether you want to relax and take in the scenery, go for a short hike, or enjoy a meal with a view, there’s something for everyone.

Take in the Panoramic Views

The main highlight of the summit is the incredible 360-degree views. On a clear day, you can see seven glaciers, Turnagain Arm, and the endless Chugach Mountains. The viewing decks provide plenty of space for photos and a chance to spot wildlife like bald eagles, bears, or Dall sheep in the distance.

Dining at Seven Glaciers Restaurant

At the top, you’ll find the Seven Glaciers Restaurant, an award-winning establishment offering panoramic views and exquisite cuisine. This AAA Four Diamond restaurant emphasizes locally sourced seafood, game, and produce, providing a unique Alaskan dining experience. Reservations are required and can be made through their official website.

Agnes’ Advice: An advance reservation at Seven Glaciers includes a complimentary tram ride to the summit.

Dine at the Bore Tide Deli & Bar

For a relaxing break, visit Bore Tide Deli & Bar, the only restaurant at the summit. It offers casual meals, local craft beers, and floor-to-ceiling windows with unbeatable mountain views. The patio seating is perfect on a warm day.

Spot Wildlife

Keep your eyes open for Alaska’s wildlife at the summit. Depending on the season, you may spot:

  • Bald eagles soaring over the valley.
  • Bears wandering through the lower slopes.
  • Dall sheep on the rocky cliffs nearby.

Hike the Scenic Trails

For those who love the outdoors, there are several hiking trails that start from the tram’s upper station:

  • The Winner Creek Trail (Upper Section) – A moderate trail leading into lush alpine meadows, perfect for wildflower viewing in summer.
  • The North Face Trail – A steep but rewarding hike that takes you back down to the base of Alyeska Resort. If you don’t want to hike both ways, you can hike up or down and take the tram the other way. This challenging trail covers approximately 2.2 miles with an elevation gain of 2,200 feet.
  • Glacier Viewing Walks – Short, easy walks from the tram station lead to viewpoints overlooking distant glaciers.

Agnes’ Advice: If you hike up Mount Alyeska, you can enjoy a complimentary tram ride back down as a reward. This policy allows hikers to ascend via trails like the North Face Trail and then descend comfortably using the tram. The North Face Trail begins near the base of the tram at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood. After reaching the summit, hikers can take the tram down free of charge.

Watch Paragliders Take Off

On summer days, you might see paragliders launching from the summit, soaring over the valley below. It’s a thrilling sight and makes for amazing photos.

Weather at the Summit

The weather at the top of Mount Alyeska can be much colder and windier than at the base, even in summer. Temperatures at the summit are often 10–20°F cooler than in Girdwood, and conditions can change rapidly. Fog, rain, and strong winds are common, especially in spring and fall.

  • Summer: Expect cooler temperatures, often in the 40s–50s°F (5–15°C), with occasional rain and wind.
  • Winter: Conditions can be harsh, with freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, and strong winds.

Agnes’ Advice: Dress in layers, bring a windproof jacket, and check the forecast before heading up! Check out my detailed Alaska packing list, which helps you prepare for your adventures!

Alyeska Tram Tickets, Pricing and Opening Hours

Tickets for the Alyeska Aerial Tram can be purchased online or at the Tram Ticket Office. If you decide to book your ticket online, you’ll save $5 per ticket (for adult, youth and military), as prices are slightly lower compared to purchasing on-site.

If you’re only interested in the tram ride, there’s no need to book in advance. In summer, there may be a line, but since Alaska’s weather is unpredictable, I wouldn’t recommend buying a ticket if visibility is poor—it’s not worth the money.

Basic Ticket Prices:

  • Adults (18–64): $48
  • Military & Youth (6–18): $38
  • Seniors (65+): $30
  • Children (5 & Under): Free

During the winter season, the Alyeska Aerial Tram operates daily from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM. On select dates, the tram extends its hours until 8:00 PM for night skiing, typically from Thursday to Saturday.

These hours may change based on the season or weather conditions, so it’s always best to check the Alyeska Resort website before your visit.
