Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, is the highest peak in North America, towering at 20,310 feet (6,190 meters). Its sheer size and beauty are breathtaking, making it one of Alaska’s most iconic landmarks.

Thanks to its towering height and location, Denali can be visible from as far as Anchorage—an impressive 240-mile drive from the park—on clear and sunny days. It is not without reason that the Koyukon Athabaskan people, native to Alaska, named this mountain “Deenaalee,” meaning “The High One” or “The Great One.” This name perfectly captures the mountain’s towering presence and awe-inspiring majesty.

Chris and I have been lucky enough to explore Alaska often, allowing us to see Denali many times and in different seasons. We’ve viewed it while exploring Denali National Park and from various spots outside the park. Denali National Park Viewpoints

We’ll begin with Denali National Park, as it brings you closest to North America’s tallest peak, offering some of the most impressive views. However, due to ongoing maintenance on the Denali Park Road, some areas are not accessible in 2026.

For this list, I’ll guide you through the top viewpoints starting from the beginning of the Denali Park Road, which starts at Mile 237 of the Parks Highway.

Up to Mile 15 of the Denali Park Road, you can drive your own car or take the free shuttle bus to Savage River. If you plan to go beyond this point (up to Mile 43 in 2026), you’ll need to book a Denali bus tour.

Important Note: Not all rental car companies in Alaska allow their vehicles to be driven on the Denali Highway. If you’re planning to rent a car or rent an RV for your Alaska trip and want to include this scenic route, make sure to check your rental agreement or ask your rental provider about restrictions. 15. Denali Highway Mile 124 to 130 (from Paxson)
