With scenic drives, guided tours, and time-efficient planning, you’ll cover breathtaking glaciers, towering mountains, and some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the world.
By prioritizing key experiences—like a glacier cruise, a flightseeing tour over Denali, and scenic road trips along the Seward and Parks Highways—you can capture the essence of Alaska in just seven days. It’s all about smart planning, and yes, it’s absolutely doable with our tips!

Best Time for This Itinerary
The best time to follow this 7-day itinerary is from mid-May to mid-September. Why?
- All recommended tours and activities are available during summer. Wildlife tours, glacier cruises, and scenic flights operate during these months.
- Long daylight hours. With up to 20 hours of daylight in midsummer, you’ll have more time to explore and enjoy the incredible scenery.
- Comfortable weather. Summer brings mild temperatures, making it perfect for outdoor adventures.
- If you’re planning your road trip between mid-August and mid-September, you’ll have a chance to see the Aurora Borealis! Be sure to check out our Chasing Northern Lights in Alaska Itinerary, highlighting some of the top spots for viewing this magical phenomenon. However, remember that the best chances for this experience are during winter.

Transportation and Accommodation
- Rent a car or RV for flexibility. This itinerary is designed for a road trip, so having your own vehicle is essential. You can rent and return the car or RV in Anchorage or rent in Anchorage and return it in Fairbanks, depending on your flight plan. But if you want to rent an RV, returning it to Anchorage is your best option.
Check out our articles: Tips for Renting a Car in Alaska and Tips for Renting an RV in Alaska.
- This plan covers paved, well-maintained roads, so a regular car is all you need—no 4WD required. With a total driving distance of 1,018 miles, it’s completely doable for even one driver, and we’ve included plenty of suggested stops along the way to stretch, take pictures, and soak in Alaska’s stunning scenery.
- At the end of each day in this one-week Alaska itinerary, we provide lodging suggestions, including hotels, and campgrounds for RV travelers, or tent camping options. We offer both budget-friendly and mid-range or luxury accommodations, depending on the location. Make your reservations ahead of time—for both hotels and campgrounds—as lodging in Alaska is limited and fills up quickly.

Travel Tips
- Prepare for adventure. Make sure to read our Alaska Packing List for Summer Adventures, which is based on years of traveling across Alaska. It’s packed with must-have items for comfort and safety. It also includes a free PDF checklist.
- Budget wisely. For a breakdown of costs, check out our article on how much it costs to visit Alaska so you know what to expect.
- Book your activities as soon as possible, as top tours in Alaska sell out quickly. Be sure to check all the details, including your check-in times and cancelation policies, for each activity.
- This itinerary assumes you start each day early in the morning, with driving beginning by at least 8 AM to make this one-week Alaska itinerary doable and ensure you experience the best of it. Pack snacks, sandwiches, energy bars, and similar items each day to skip lunch stops in some locations. I’ve included dinner recommendations for each evening because some locations can be crowded in summer, and waiting an hour or two for a sit-down lunch might waste valuable exploration time. Focus on making the most of your adventure!
- Have extra time? If you can extend your trip, don’t miss our 10 Days in Alaska Itinerary, which features a loop from Anchorage. If you prefer RV trips, check out 14-day Alaska RV Itinerary.

It’s good to know about a chance to see the northern lights when visiting between mid-August to mid-September.
